How The Adrenal Function Affects Your Daily Life?
The purpose of our adrenal glands is to help our bodies cope with daily challenges, hence the adrenal glands are also known as “the glands of stress”. They enable our bodies to deal with stress from every possible source. Simply being busy can be a form of stress, so it is not surprising that in today’s modern world you may experience stress at one time or another. However, stress also comes in other forms, including:
- Work-related pressures
- Endless emails and negative news stories
- Excessive physical (exercise) or mental strain
- Being stuck in traffic
- Personal and family issues
- Financial difficulties
- Divorce, separation and/or relationship issues
- Personal injury or illness
- Sleep deprivation
- Poor food choices and nutritional deficiencies
- Death of a loved one
- Any significant changes, for example- moving house, changing jobs etc.
In response to stress, our body releases the hormone cortisol- a chemical that allows us to stay in an active, attentive state for long periods in order to handle the stress at hand. Every individual has their homeostatic level of stress at which they function optimally. When stress is intense or unresolved it has a negative impact physiologically and emotionally.
Health Problems Related To Stress And Anxiety
The brain is the first part of the body to respond to stress by firstly stimulating the release of the stress hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline. This results in increasing the heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and blood flow to the muscles and brain. During chronic stress this allows bacteria, viruses or tumours to flourish and makes blood more prone to clotting.
The second response is the release of cortisol and other steroids, which in excess promotes the accumulation of abdominal fat, supresses immunity, shrinks brain cells and impairs memory.
Stress has also been attributed to depression, phobias, substance dependency, as well as heart disease, cancer, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, insomnia, gastric reflux, sexual dysfunction and infertility.
What Happens To Your Body During Stress?
There are two main components involved in the stress system:
- The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis
- The sympathetic nervous system (SNS)
These two components orchestrate our physiological stress response to initiate the “flight or fight” reaction, as well as preserving homeostasis. The HPA axis and SNS intimately connect the endocrine and nervous systems to control a large part of our physiology, including hormonal regulation, blood sugar levels and the stress response.
The cornerstone of our physiological stress coping mechanism is the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) Axis. This endocrinological control system is governed by the hypothalamus – a thumb-sized portion of the brain that activates, controls, and integrates the nervous system and endocrine processes. The hypothalamus also controls many bodily functions, such as temperature, sleep and appetite.
