Menstruation begins with puberty and is a natural progression and part of life right up to menopause.

Painful menstruation and premenstrual syndrome should not be the norm, and it often indicates that you might be suffering from hormonal imbalance.

Issues Relating To This Uniquely Female Syndrome

Hormones are an integral part of every woman’s life. If your reproductive hormones are imbalance, it will impact negatively on your life.

An imbalance of these hormones gives to rise to PMS, also known as premenstrual tension.

This problem will affect most women, always from around ovulation time till the start of your next menstruation.

Possible Mental Problems Relating To PMS

  • Disturbing mood changes
  • Often short-tempered, anxious and tense

  • Depressed, unhappy feelings
  • Occasional confusion and lack of concentration, and sporadic memory loss
  • Tiredness
  • Sleep disorders

How PMS Physically Affects The Body

  • Bloating of the lower abdomen due to fluid retention
  • Resultant temporary weight gain
  • Slight swelling of breasts, accompanied by some tenderness
  • Constant dull headache, or even a severe migraine attack
  • Disturbed appetite with unusual food cravings
  • Tiredness and a lack of strength
  • Libido issues
  • Digestive disorders, often constipation, and diarrhea

What Is The Root Cause Of PMS?

PMS is a direct result of a hormonal imbalance during the monthly cycle:

  • Progesterone levels are lower than normal for the entire cycle, while in the latter part of a cycle, oestrogen levels tend to be higher than usual.
  • Often discrepancies in prostaglandins or neurotransmitters can contribute as well.
  • Raised incidences of the hormone prolactin could also impact on PMS symptoms.
  • Other issues which may affect hormonal imbalance include anxiety, incorrect diet, being overweight or severely underweight, and a possible thyroid dysfunction.

Menstrual Pain

For number of women pain during menstruation is quite debilitating. This is also known as dysmenorrhea. Symptoms may include severe cramps in the abdomen, possible lower back pain and some nausea or vomiting.

Raised oestrogen levels during the cycle and imbalance in prostaglandins may also impact negatively on pain and cramps while menstruating.

Lack Of Regular Periods

Some women may experience a total absence of menstruation during their reproductive life. This is known as amenorrhoea, while a very light or irregular period, is known as oligomenorrhoea.

The main reason for this is an imbalance of oestrogen and progesterone, but may also be caused by rigorous exercising. These reasons can also apply to bouts of heavy periods with prolonged bleeding, medically known as menorrhagia.

Balance Your Hormones And Menstrual Issues

Most women will menstruate from the age of about 15 to 45 years of age. If your hormones are sadly out of balance and you have been suffering for a long time, now is the time to embrace the problem and seek help to sort out and balance your cycle.
