What Is Thyroid Dysfunction?

Thyroid dysfunction can be the result of altered physiological processes including inflammation, oxidative stress and nutritional deficiencies. These functional disturbances may interfere with thyroid hormone synthesis, conversion of T4 to T3 or directly damage the thyroid gland itself.

Thyroid disease is highly prevalent, with a proportion of disease still unrecognised because of inadequate testing. The prevalence increases with age and is greater in women.

The psychological impact of chronic stress on the thyroid gland is well documented. Chronic stress disrupts thyroid function in the following ways:

  • Depresses HPA axis function
  • Reduces active thyroid hormone levels
  • Promotes thyroid autoimmunity
  • Causes thyroid hormone resistance
  • Causes imbalances in other hormones

In addition to chronic mental and physical stress, other stressors such as dysbiosis, exposure to mould and biotoxins, disruption to circadian rhythm, EMF exposure and endocrine-disrupting chemicals, can impact the function of the thyroid gland.

What Is The Function Of The Thyroid?

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland situated at the front of the neck under the larynx (voice box) and behind trachea (windpipe). The thyroid gland acts as the body’s metabolic thermostat, and controls the rate of the body’s functions.

The function of the thyroid is to produce thyroid hormones. In addition to its cell differentiation during development, the thyroid gland, via its hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), maintains body temperature and metabolic homeostasis. Thyroid function is regulated by the pituitary secretion of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in response to changes in free thyroid hormone concentrations.

The basal metabolic rate is the level of energy required to keep the body functioning normally when it is at rest, and is controlled by these thyroid hormones. Both under and overactivity of the thyroid gland can cause severe disruption to the body’s metabolism and functions.

This may result from a defect of the thyroid gland itself, malfunction of the pituitary gland or auto-immune diseases, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or Grave’s disease.
